Catherine, the daughter, has chronic asthma, which the family says is a result of the poor air in the region due to Palo Solo’s close proximity to the Masaya volcano and its gases. The closest clinic is nearly two hours away by foot. There has been tough times when the family has had to go to the hospital instead, which is even farther, but have not always been successful in finding the right medicine to treat asthma and other diseases. They have difficulty paying for these medicines, and do not always have money to pay the doctor and clinic visits.
They currently live without electricity.
Like other families in the region, they are also affected by a lack of water in the area, especially during droughts.
