As the majority of kids in this community, Santo's kids will be needing school supplies for the start of their '08 school year in February. Santo also has a need for basic farming materials/goods, which costs have inflated during the last couple of months due to droughts affecting most of Nicaragua.
Members of this family are occasionally affected by mosquito-infected diseases such as dengue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_fever). In order to deal with the high incidences of dengue infectations, the Calero-Calero family and others in this community will need medical supplies as well as mosquito nets (particularly for infants).
Water is very scarce in the mountaneous region of Palo Solo and La Concha, especially during droughts that causes their well to run dry. Many families are then forced to purchase drinking water at a marked-up price just to be able to survive.
